Researchers Now Consider CBD A Potential Treatment For COVID-19
July 11, 2020
Some earlier pieces of research contraindicated the application of CBD for coronavirus disease, but new evidence suggests that cannabis is possibly effective in this regard. Remember, cannabidiol (CBD) is a cannabis plant compound.
Experts in lung health do not suggest inhaling combustible substances such as marijuana and tobacco, because of the inflammation it possibly causes in the airways. Anyhow, cannabis is now viewed as a possible option for dealing with coronavirus disease symptoms. Researchers working at the Texas Biomed and the University of Nebraska presently feel that cannabidiol could lessen the harmful lung inflammation due to coronavirus disease. In a recent write-up published in the peer-reviewed journal named ‘Brain, Behavior, and Immunity’, they demanded further research on phytocannabinoids’ potential inflammation-reducing and anti-viral effects.
“Acute infection is associated with a cytokine superstorm, which contributes to the symptoms of fever, cough, muscle pain,” those researchers noted in it. In many cases, lung swelling possibly causes pneumonia, which then makes breathing difficult for the immunocompromised patient.
They did not note that any efficacious therapeutic treatment option has emerged. According to them, some of these treatments potentially cause hypertriglyceridemia and pancreatitis as secondary effects. The occurrence of these issues then raises the patient’s possibility of having a stroke, heart disease, and heart attack. These things “make it imperative to explore effective alternative anti-inflammatory strategies,” noted those researchers.
They referenced earlier pieces of research that showed cannabis’s novel inflammation-reducing properties. Special importance was put on cannabidiol’s anti-inflammatory potential since it lacks the mind-altering effects of tetrahydrocannabinol. For an uninitiated, both THC and CBD are cannabis’s best-known phytocannabinoids. The former phytocannabinoid possibly causes increased anxiety, heart rate and disorientation in some patients. Conversely, even the WHO regards the latter phytocannabinoid as a “generally safe” substance.
They have also stated that cannabidiol is therapeutically beneficial for coronavirus disease patients. So, going by their findings, it appears more than just an anti-inflammatory substance. The coronavirus epidemic has produced much uncertainty about the economy, social interactions, and job security, which causes an increase in anxiety, fear and depression. An earlier study indicated that cannabidiol possibly improves the emotional health of individuals who experience stress and anxiety after their Ebola recovery.
There are much fear and anxiety related to coronavirus infection in the public, and cannabidiol is already shown to be effective in treating these two issues. So, unsurprisingly, researchers recommend doing randomized clinical tests on CBD and coronavirus disease down the road.
